How It All Began

September 29th, 2009

Once upon a time, the Celts lived in a land currently known as Great Britain. The Celts had their own unique culture. But soon, the Romans come and invaded Britain. The Romans spoke Latin, unlike the Celts. The Romans pushed most of the Celts aside, forcing their own culture upon the land, making some of the Celts Roman. However, the Romans also brought Christianity to Britain. This religion spread across the country with the Christian monks. Eventually, the Romans fell, and left Britain. However, soon the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes invade. They kill some of the Celts. However, they realize that they will last longer if they work together. The problem was none of them spoke a similar language. Thus, they made a new language, known as Old English today. For entertainment people would tell stories to other people, including children. These stories were known as scops. Beowulf is an example of a scop. When the children grew up, they told it to the people of their time. Eventually, the Christian monks, who now spoke old English, started writing down these tales. Thus, the book Beowulf came to be. However, today, only one of the original copies of tales exists.
